United States, 6th May 2025 – Training your dog is about more than just obedience—it’s about building a relationship based on mutual respect, clear communication, and trust. Teaching your dog a few essential commands can dramatically improve their behavior, boost their confidence, and create a more peaceful home for everyone.
Whether you’re training a brand-new puppy or brushing up with an older dog, here are ten key commands every dog should learn.
1. Sit
This is usually the first command dogs learn—and for good reason. “Sit” helps you manage your dog in almost any situation. It’s useful for greeting people, waiting at doors, or calming them during training sessions.
Start by holding a treat just above your dog’s nose, then slowly move it back over their head. As their bottom hits the ground, say “sit” and reward them.
2. Stay
“Stay” teaches patience and reinforces self-control. Whether you’re keeping your dog from dashing out the door or helping them remain calm in a busy area, this command is a must.
Begin with your dog in a “sit” or “down” position, use a hand signal, and say “stay.” Step back slowly, reward them for holding the position, and increase the distance gradually over time.
3. Come
The “come” command is essential for safety, especially when your dog is off-leash or in a distracting environment. A solid recall can prevent accidents and help your dog feel secure returning to you.
Use a cheerful voice, say “come,” and praise your dog the moment they move toward you. Practice often and make it a rewarding experience.
4. Down
“Down” is great for calming an excited dog and encouraging them to settle. It’s especially helpful when you need your dog to relax around guests or in public spaces.
Lure your dog from a sitting position to the ground with a treat. Once their body touches the floor, say “down” and offer praise.
5. Leave It
Dogs often want to grab things they shouldn’t—trash, food, or dangerous objects. “Leave it” teaches your dog to ignore something tempting and focus on you instead.
Practice by offering a low-value treat in one hand while holding a better reward in the other. When your dog avoids the first treat and looks at you, say “leave it” and give them the better reward.
6. Drop It
If your dog already has something in their mouth, “drop it” is your go-to command. This is important for both safety and preventing destructive chewing.
Offer a high-value treat and say “drop it.” As your dog releases the item, reward them immediately and praise them for letting go.
7. Heel
Walking nicely on a leash is a skill that makes walks more enjoyable. “Heel” teaches your dog to stay by your side rather than pulling ahead.
Practice by walking with your dog in a distraction-free space, rewarding them every few steps they stay at your side. Use the word “heel” to reinforce the position.
8. Wait
“Wait” is different from “stay.” It’s about pausing briefly—for example, before going through a door or jumping out of the car.
Ask your dog to “wait,” then release them with a separate cue like “okay.” It helps teach control and prevents impulsive behavior in daily situations.
9. Watch Me
This command is all about attention. Getting your dog to focus on you—even in a distracting environment—is key to successful training.
Hold a treat near your eyes and say “watch me.” Reward your dog as soon as they make eye contact. With practice, this builds strong focus and responsiveness.
10. Place
“Place” teaches your dog to go to a specific spot and stay there until released. It’s a great way to manage your dog’s behavior when guests arrive or during mealtime.
Guide them to a mat or bed, say “place,” and reward when they settle there. Practice until they understand that “place” means calm and stay-put.
Wrapping Up
Teaching your dog these ten commands provides structure, improves safety, and deepens your connection. With positive reinforcement, patience, and consistency, your dog can master these skills and become a happy, confident companion for years to come.
